Newport News, in southeastern Virginia, at the mouth of the James River; was incorporated as a city 1896. With nearby harbors it forms the Port of Hampton Roads, one of the principal commercial ports in the U.S. Important industries here include shipbuilding and ship repairing, seafood processing, and coal exporting. Office machines, metal items, and electronic equipment, including automotive electronic items, also are produced. A U.S. Department of Energy particle physics research laboratory and Fort Eustis, a U.S. army transportation facility, are located here. Newport News also is the site of Christopher Newport University; the Mariners Museum, with a collection of artifacts depicting life at sea; the War Memorial Museum of Virginia, containing exhibits on the two world wars; the Virginia Living Museum, with zoological and botanical exhibits in natural settings, a planetarium, an aquarium, and an aviary; an army transportation museum; and the Victory Arch, a memorial to U.S. armed forces.

The site of present-day Newport News was settled about 1620 by Irish colonists. The settlement was fortified by federal troops during the American Civil War; in 1862 the battle between the ironclad ships Monitor and Merrimack took place off Newport News. Major industrial development did not begin here until the early 1880s, when the city became a railroad terminus. The shipbuilding industry was started here in 1886, and the city now contains one of the world's leading shipyards. In 1958 the city of Warwick was consolidated with Newport News.
